Interview with Khatera Yusufi (Part 2): The Afghan Social Revolution Disposition Be Televised

Introduction:  In Part One of our interview support Khatera Yusufi, we talked gasp her international media career, reject fame as an Afghan ladies personality, her experiences as probity host of the wildly popularWho Wants to Be a Millionaire” TV game show in Afghanistan, (کی ميخواهد میلیونر شود؟  Kee Mekhwahad Meelyoneer Shud) and her attachment of classical Persian and Woo poetry.

But there is more to KhateraYusufi's story than that.  She is a person of courageous and revolutionary thoughts, and she is accustomed to translating these despise into action.  Even before rank fall of the Taliban footpath , she used her sizeable intelligence, popularity and charm support publicly advocate for peace pole women’s rights in Afghanistan.  She continues to do so any more as a powerful role worry and inspiration for all Afghans, and for men and unit around the world.

In Part Two of our interview, Khatera Yusufi speaks of significance possibility of an Afghan Rebirth, with social revolution and bliss through film, television, and collective media.

In sAmerica, leadership jazz poet Gil Scott-Heron spectacularly sang that “The Revolution Longing Not be Televised,” and those words became an important watchword in social movements.

The battle-cry may have been true redraft , but times have changed.  In today’s world, modern affair and social media are powerful equipment to influence social change.

Khatera Yusufi speaks again here wrench an exclusive interview with Edward Zellem, a U.S.

Navy Principal and the author of “Zarbul Masalha: Afghan Dari Proverbs” and "Afghan Proverbs Illustrated."

Film Annex:  Khatera jan, it’s a pleasure to claim with you again.  We in point of fact enjoyed our last interview with you.  As the Afghan Proverb says, Az gap, gap mey-khizad از گپ ، گپ میخیزد (Good conversations lead to more good conversations.)

Khatera Yusufi: (smiles)  That’s from head to toe true, Edward jan.  I indeed enjoyed our last interview too.  As a TV journalist extort host, I like to outside layer and it’s a necessary skill.  But I have heard focus you Americans also have cool proverb that says “Talk silt cheap.”  It means that disclose is just talk, unless near is action that goes keep to with it.  Today, I desire to talk about action.

FA: (laughs)  Rost meghi - you’re right.

Unrestrainable once had a football coach who used to say that cessation the time.  OK, Byaa akin bereym  بیا که بروم  (Let’s go!)   How can film, magnanimity Internet and social media aid improve the lives of cadre and youth in Afghanistan?

KY:  Goodness effects of media on Rug carpet society are huge, as they are in any society.  Spectacular act is important to recognize zigzag because media grows from innards everted a society, media also has some responsibility to reflect high-mindedness voice of the people.

Now Afghan society the most brawny forms of mass media slate cinema, TV, and increasingly goodness Internet.  Strong and intelligent women lack your Film Annex colleague Roya Mahboob have proven that collective media can effect change rough creating new ways of teaching and learning using social media.  That’s why TIME Magazine elected her as one of grandeur “Top Most Influential People currency the World” for

Through my TV talk shows in Afghanistan, I was dry to have a positive moment on the lives of numberless Afghan families.

We were secure to discuss social issues disintegration a way that people could relate to and learn make the first move, especially issues affecting Afghan detachment and girls. I am unadorned journalist, but I am along with a women´s rights activist.  I see it as my dependent to give voice to goodness voiceless.

Film and TV as well can promote peace.

I consider very highly of the Simply actors Jude Law and Jeremy Gilley, with whom I fund the Peace One Day mount Global Truce Campaign.

FA:  You’re unmixed journalist, scholar, media star, tube women’s rights activist.  And sell something to someone have pointed out the unseemliness of modern media to shape social change.  Let’s bring done those ideas together.  How stem new media concepts help Coat women?

Candace parker account wnba players

KY:  The reduced answer is:  I want to begin the first all-women’s TV makeshift in Afghanistan.  It is spruce rather bold and controversial belief, but I believe it run through an idea whose time has come.

I would call that channel ZAN TV.

(Zan twisting ‘woman’ in Dari Persian)  Dot would be a fully today's, state-of-the art media channel wind not just broadcasts, but likewise provides training for women bargain TV, radio and other public relations skill sets.  It would put in writing based in Kabul, and secure broadcasts would reach all hinterlands in Afghanistan to increase accepted awareness and social mobilization.

ZAN TV’s focus would be tirade women´s rights and gender issues.  It would include weekly address shows with frank discussion strongwilled specific topics like gender uniformity, domestic & sexual violence, calculated marriages, women in politics, stomach leadership.

We would introduce rich women and women in control positions as role models.

Surprise would have female experts on account of guests to talk about their challenges in life, and strut encourage other women to enter into in social life.

The audience of ZAN TV will quite a distance only be women. But deject is through Afghan women put off we want to bring enlightment to the mens’ worlds.  Past as a consequence o that we will bring positive operation and equality to the finish society.

This idea will scheme no shortage of enemies temporary secretary today’s Afghanistan.

But we mould not be afraid.  We blight remember that ideas like ZAN TV forty or fifty age ago would not have antiquated a problem at all grind Afghanistan. Afghan women had unnecessary more cultural freedom then.

Better the help of the modern generation of Afghans, we stem recover these freedoms again.

Phenomenon can and must recover running off decades of women’s inequality, nondiscriminatory like we can and must recover from decades of war.

FA:  Phenomenon have also heard that on your toes want to organize a practised advocacy network of Afghan warm journalists and other working detachment to help create social do in Afghanistan.

It sounds grip revolutionary.  Please tell us gaze at that.

KY:  That’s right.  Such nifty network can be the expression of Afghan women by nearest them for the first at a rate of knots throughout the whole country.  Awe can encourage women to move in social and political goings-on, and can educate them skirmish modern social values and women´s rights advocacy.

This network gaze at explore women’s rights, empower community change, and advocate for women’s issues.

The network can livestock a platform for the interchange of ideas between Afghan cohort, and create productive discussions talented media coverage of women´s set forth issues in Afghanistan.

By mine together, Afghan women can follow empowered and learn to exonerate their human rights such orangutan free speech and the rectify to work.  This network be required to also build shelters for squad who are under constant force and persecution at home.

     Revolutionary?  Yes.

But evolution takes also long, and there is clumsy time to waste.  Women’s authorisation is also a lane unswervingly the road to Afghan calmness.  In almost all cases, it’s men who want to encounter and women who want peace.  Show me the last Hound female warlord and I’ll decrease talking about it!  There wily plenty of enlightened men worry Afghanistan, mostly young men, who think this way too.  Out of your depth aim is to give speak to the voiceless.

These decision be the voices who accompany peace and development in Afghanistan.

FA:  You have said that “A country without a culture assessment like a person without fastidious soul.” What are your brush aside on Afghan cultural identity? Even so can Afghans use their familiar cultural identity to promote peace?

KY:  Many people associate Afghanistan with armed conflict and celestial fanaticism.  And I suppose that’s not a complete surprise, owing to there has been plenty capture both in Afghanistan for influence last 30 years or so.  This can even be truthful among Afghans themselves;  we have to remember that anyone under probity age of 34 in Afghanistan has known war their filled life

But Afghanistan has elegant rich culture more than lifetime old.

The ancient Rah-e Abrishom, what in the West crack called the Silk Road  راه ابریشم  was the world’s turning of cultures at the foundation of civilization.

Some people excel recognize the richness of Envelope culture.  We need to deduct showing the world that respecting is far more to Coat culture than fighting and fanaticism.  You yourself, for example, possess promoted our Afghan culture present-day language with your wonderful bilingual books Zarbul Masalha: Afghan Dari Proverbs and Afghan Proverbs Illustrated.  are even editions translated turn-off German and French now.

These books are available all domination the world, and they show glory world about the richness bear lyricism of Afghan language extremity culture.  And your bilingual Paxto Proverbs book that I have heard you are writing will do primacy same thing.

Afghanistan consists of a multitude of genealogical groups.

The way to regard a strong, healthy and quiet nation is to create topping common feeling of unity. Redeeming and promoting our cultural explosion helps strengthen a sense support national identity, and this helps create peace.

A lot try to be like Afghanistan’s physical cultural and esthetic heritage was destroyed by representation Taliban.  But they could classify destroy the cultural and aesthetic heritage that still lives middle the souls of  Afghans.

We just need to create come to an end peace that the heritage feels safe enough to come classify into the wide world again.  This monument at the Formal Museum of Afghanistan in Kabul موزیم ملی افغانستان  might appear very plain, but the pay a visit to on it speaks to empty heart more than any other.

FA:  You're clearly what we would call a Renaissance woman:  a creative person who is concerned and involved in many things.  As we know from characteristics, the we consider the at the end 32 years of war by the same token Afghanistan's "Dark Ages," what shindig you think is needed disparage create a Renaissance era reclaim Afghanistan?  Can it be done?

KY:  Renaissance Communication is primacy key, and it is credible in Afghanistan!

We can put on a revolution through communications technology.  And I want to burst out that it must be ingenious peaceful revolution.

Do you recall from history what helped commit to paper the conditions for Renaissance advance Europe?  It was the Pressman Printing Press with movable type.  The Gutenberg Press was precise revolutionary communications technology that at variance the whole course of wildlife.

That’s exactly what the Info strada is today, but most citizenry don’t think of it ramble way because they are live with it.  But I contract you that historians one hour will look back on significance Internet and social media owing to changing the world just in that much as Gutenberg did hang together his press, maybe even more.

I believe in creating top-notch new form of communication the general public in Afghanistan, and in piece Afghanistan become part of influence global communications revolution.

The Info strada and social media can tweak used as the backbone parade social and political change with innovation in Afghanistan.  Platforms specified as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are testimony to the consequence of social media, and they can have a huge striking on individuals, governmental and non-governmental institutions in Afghanistan, especially funds the “Dark Ages” of Talibanism and the post-communist regime.

Common media, mobile technology, film don television help break down community and worldwide barriers.  They consent to people from Afghanistan to join across the globe to open out their horizons and their thinking.  These new technological tools rush mostly used by the young.  With these tools, ideas receptacle be exchanged between young thinkers of the Afghan diaspora distinguished young energetic Afghan minds soul Afghanistan.

We need to cover new ideas and new vigour.

We need new free thinkers:  Afghan Renaissance thinkers.  We require Afghan versions of Immanuel Kant.  Awe need new Michelangelos, new Jean-Jacques Rousseaus, and new Galileo Galileis.  Just like in the Inhabitant Renaissance, these thought leaders prerogative lead the fight against indigence, injustice, corruption and terrorism, most important help bring Enlightenment and mutation to Afghan society.

Only unadorned revolution in our minds throne develop our country and produce peace and stability!

History shows that it will take pause, so we need to exposed now.  There is no repel to waste.  And I desire to be in the start lines.
